The Peche Children of Honduras

The children in the Peche village were delightful and fun to be around. They enjoyed playing games including soccer and frisbee. They also enjoyed having their pictures taken but many wouldn't smile for the camera. We realized that there were no mirrors in the village, and most of the people, including the children, didn't have a good idea of what they looked like.

We built friendships with our Honduran hosts at Rancho el Paraiso, the Peche villagers, and with each other.

We worked side by side with the Peche villagers to build two latrines, lay cement floors in six houses, put roofs on six houses, replace chimneys in five houses, build a mud wall for one house, and have fun with the kids in Bible school.

Travels in Honduras

We flew into San Pedro Sula, and after spending the night at a nice hotel, spent the next day traveling to Tegucegalpa by motor bus and then to Jutacalpa by school bus. The roads were paved, but we quickly learned that the yellow center line was just a hint of a suggestion of where to drive. After spending the night in Jutacalpa, we continued on to Rancho el Paraiso on a mostly unpaved road with lots of potholes. While at the ranch, we rode in Land Cruisers -- 75 minutes each way to our village on a road that got bumpier as we went. Families in Honduras must use their fields for some myterious purpose because they turn their animals out on the roads. :-)

Ready to Go!!!

Our mission team got together to pack the supplies we are taking to Honduras, share a meal, and practice songs to share with our Honduran hosts. Our songs in Spanish need some work -- well, a lot of work!

We leave on July 11 and will fly to San Pedro Sula via Houston. Everyone is excited!

Fiesta con Dios -- May 2008

The Honduras mission team hosted Fiesta con Dios in May, and 100 Horizon members and guests enjoyed a wonderful dinner and entertainment. The evening started with a salsa tasting event. After dinner children and adults trying to hit a pinata, and the evening ended with singing and dancing. The event raised money for the mission trip and shared the spirit of the trip with members of the congregation.

Honduras 2008 -- April Rummage Sale

Sixteen mission team members are planning to visit Honduras the week of July 11 through 20, 2008. Planning and fund raising began in early 2008. The trip will cost approximately $28,000 and is funded by Horizon Presbyterian Church's mission budget, special fund raising events, and donations from members and friends. The rummage sale in April was fun, helped with fund raising to support the mission trip, and also helped Horizon members with their Spring cleaning!

Honduras 2002 and 2005

Horizon Presbyterian Church in the Ahwatukee-Foothills of Phoenix AZ has taken mission trips to Honduras in 2002 and 2005. Mission teams of approximately 15 people have spent a week at Rancho el Paraiso near San Esteban, department of Olancho, Honduras. The ranch is base of operations for Honduras Outreach (HOI), a non-denominational, non-profit Christian organization headquartered in Atlanta.

HOI operates medical, education, spirtual life, agriculture, economic development, community development, and short term mission programs in central Honduras. While in country, our mission teams have helped with community development by working side by side with Hondurans who are working to improve housing and sanitation in their communities. The experiences have been sources of joy and spiritual growth for our mission teams, and Horizon has maintained contact with and support of HOI during the times between our mission trips.
